1. Quick Checklist
- Always wear a PFD (life jacket)
- Dress for the water temperature, not just the air
- Layer using synthetic or wool materials (no cotton)
- Bring extra dry clothes in a dry bag
2. Summer Kayaking
Light, breathable clothing works best — but don’t skip safety gear. UV exposure and dehydration are major risks.
- Quick-dry shirt & shorts or swimsuit
- Water shoes or sandals with straps
- Wide-brim hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
- Optional: rash guard or long-sleeve UPF shirt
3. Spring/Fall Conditions
Weather can be unpredictable. Water might be cold even if air is warm. Use layers and bring a windbreaker or splash jacket.
- Base layer (synthetic or wool)
- Insulating layer (fleece or neoprene)
- Outer waterproof shell or paddle jacket
- Neoprene gloves & socks if chilly
4. Cold Water / Winter Kayaking
Cold shock is real. If the water is below 60°F, wear a wetsuit or drysuit. Hypothermia can happen fast.
- Drysuit with thermal layers underneath (ideal)
- Wetsuit (3mm+) with paddle jacket (budget)
- Neoprene booties, gloves, and a beanie
- Spare thermal clothes in a dry bag
5. What Not to Wear
- No cotton: It holds water and chills the body fast
- Flip-flops (fall off easily)
- Heavy boots or jeans
- Unsecured accessories (rings, phones without float case)
